面试英语技巧—如何回答“What’s your biggest weakness?”

工作面试时常常出现的让人头疼的提问就是 “What’s your biggest weakness?” 如果说出自己的缺点,怕给自己的面试带来负面影响;说没有缺点,又显得不真实。

于是有人用明贬暗褒地方法试图避开问题,比如回答“I am too much of a perfectionist.” “I am a workaholic and tend to take on too much responsibility.” 或 “I am too straightforward.” 资深的recruiters已经听过太多这样的回答了,并把这叫做humble bragging。 这样的回答让你显得不够真诚,  太油滑。

那么怎么答呢?

先要搞明白问这个问题的目的是什么。面试官希望根据回答看出求职者是否意识到个人职场技能上有哪些需要提高,并在针对这些弱点在刻意学习和改进。

回答当然因人而异,但也有其一定之规:

1. 你回答的缺点不要正好是你所应聘岗位所必须的任职要求(a must-have),而是一个不是必须,但有则更好的技能(a nice-to-have skill)。

比如,如果你应聘accountant, 而你回答“I don’t have a great eye for detail.”就不利于你的应聘。你可以回答不是核心要求的缺点,如“I often get nervous when presenting to a big group.”

2. 在说了缺点之后,讲讲你你是如何克服(或计划克服)这个缺点的 (talk about actions you’re taking to overcome it)。

比如: “My biggest weakness is that I often get nervous when presenting to a big group.  I tended to avoid those situations. But I’ve realized that presentation is important for my career development.  I recently  joined a Toastmasters club to improve my presentation skills.”

“I find that pressure can get to me when I need to work on multiple projects. I am finding ways to minimize this. I went on a time management course and have started to prioritize tasks. All these have helped me to stay organized and productive and reduce my stress.”

 

一般面试官都会问到这个问题,面试前根据自己情况和职位要求做好充足准备。做到言之有物,真实可信。
