
In the Hollywood movie All About Eve, Bette Davis delivers the iconic line, “Fasten your seatbelts. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.” When AI reached mainstream attention in late 2023, nobody warned us to buckle up, but now we are beginning to feel the bumps as AI reshapes many industries, expectations, and skills.
The Best of Times vs. The Worst of Times
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness…”
This is the opening line from A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, originally used to delineate the historical backdrop of the French Revolution. Now it is often borrowed to describe the current age of rapidly developing AI.
On one hand, this is indeed the best of times. AI has brought a slew of conveniences and unprecedented efficiency. With one or a few prompts, we can generate an article ready to use immediately, or obtain functional code, or receive answers to complex questions. As an “all-knowing assistant,” AI seems to free us from many exhausting, time-consuming tasks.
According to a Gallup survey in the last quarter of 2025, nearly half of U.S. employees were using AI at work, led by the technology sector, followed by finance firms and higher education. People in leadership roles use AI more than other employees.
Anecdotal evidence shows AI is helping improve productivity. For instance, AI can synthesize documents and datasets that would otherwise take an individual hours to review.
On the other hand, this is also the worst of times, particularly when it comes to employment, energy consumption, and confidentiality. Employment concerns stand out most prominently. Almost every day, news headlines revolve around AI’s potential to replace a sizable portion of the workforce, a shock hitting particularly hard to young people just entering or about to enter the workforce. College graduates now face tougher job markets; it’s increasingly hard to land an entry level job. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned that AI would wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs.
Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “godfather of AI,” shared his thoughts in an interview with the Financial Times:
“We are at a point in history where something amazing is happening, and it may be amazingly good, and it may be amazingly bad.”
His words mirror the famous opening of Dickens’ novel.
The Uncertainty of the Future
The concerns surrounding AI stem largely from its unpredictability. As Hinton emphasized, “We don’t know what is going to happen, we have no idea, and people who tell you what is going to happen are just being silly. …We can make guesses, but things aren’t going to stay like they are.”
At this moment, without well-deliberated and feasible regulations in sight, the path forward, particularly the prospect of human jobs, is marked by uncertainty and speculation.
The newly published The Future of Jobs Report 2025, which incorporated the perspective of over 1,000 leading global employers, shows that 60% of employers are expecting the advancement of digital technology to transform their business. This creates a chain effect, leading to divergent effects on employment.
Notably, 2025 saw the highest workforce reduction since 2020, with 1.22 million positions eliminated. In the private sector, the tech industry took the harshest blow, cutting 154,000 roles, a 15% increase from 2024, with AI implementation cited as the main reason.
Regarding the future of jobs, even technology pioneers seem to have differing opinions. In May 2025, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said, “You won’t lose your job to AI—you’ll lose your job to somebody who uses AI.” However, with the widespread adoption of AI, especially given that over 90% of college students are already using AI in their studies, Huang’s statement is becoming outdated. At the recently concluded 2026 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Huang shifted his claim, underscoring the need for blue-collar workers, especially “electricians that we need to build out AI data centers.”
Let’s look at other tech leaders’ takes on jobs and employment:
Sundar Pichai (CEO of Alphabet/Google):
“It will evolve and transition certain jobs. People will need to adapt, and then there will be areas where it will impact some jobs.”
“If they still go to college at all, they could very well be like leaving on a mission to explore the solar system on a spaceship in some kind of completely new exciting, super well-paid, super interesting job. “
Alex Karp (CEO of Palantir Technologies):
“[AI] will destroy humanities jobs. ”
Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla and SpaceX):
“In the long term…maybe 10 to 20 years…my prediction is that work will be optional. It’ll be like playing sports or a video game or something like that.”
Their estimates–the good, the bad, the ugly–are largely based on their speculations and lack consistency. After all, the forthcoming job market is not something for them to address; these tech giants focus primarily on the scalability of their technology and the competition for market share.
Embracing Challenges among All the Unknowns
Growing up in an era where AI is integrated into daily life, young people are facing both opportunities and challenges brought about by AI, from learning academic subjects to seeking jobs to planning for career paths as industries evolve.
- Be Comfortable with Uncertainty
Okay, maybe not completely comfortable, but I think you know what I mean. When you cannot change the surroundings, learn to adapt to them.
Rooted in our ancestry, humans have developed a strong preference for certainty because predictability improves survival and maintains cognitive stability. But as we enter the age of digital technology, AI’s constant development and its tremendous impacts on our work and lives have pushed us to adopt a resilient mindset.
One way to retain inner composure is to be well-informed. Keep up with the fast-evolving AI trend and development through reading news and listening to related podcasts or webinars. Rich, diverse information allows for critical and analytical thinking, which is critical for making sound decisions and taking strategic action.
- Use AI for Improving Learning and Working
Like it or not, AI is here and will stay, stronger each day. Instead of seeing it as our opponent, why not use it for our benefit? With that said, don’t rely on AI for everything.
Jenson Huang shared his use of AI: “I’m not asking it to think for me. I’m asking it to teach me things that I don’t know or help me solve problems that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to solve reasonably.”
There are many ways AI can support our learning. For example, when I was self-teaching Spanish, I asked Gemini to explain the use of certain words and generate practice questions.
I may ask AI to summarize a long science report if I only need to know the gist of it. But for deep learning and self-development, I would read the full article and take brief notes.
- Be a Life-long Learner
In 2026, during a discussion at Consumer Electronics Show (CES), one of the world’s most influential technology events, Bob Sternfels, Global Managing Partner of McKinsey & Company, and Hemant Taneja, CEO of General Catalyst, both suggested that continuous learning will become the norm, with the end of the era of “learn once, work forever.”
The Future of Jobs Report 2025 lists top sought after core skills in 2025-2030, including analytical thinking, resilience/flexibility/agility, leadership/social influence. Fasting growing technology-related skills are AI/big data, networks/cybersecurity, and technology literacy. But those hard skills need to be complemented by soft skills like creative thinking and resilience. One needs to persistently sharpen those skills to keep a competitive edge.
- Build Creativity
In the age where mass-produced content by AI is flooding onto almost every platform, unique ideas and content will stand out.
Take marketing as an example. According to an article published on Psychology Today, as AI is being more frequently used in the marketing practice, the result is disappointing: “Brand voice smoothing into sameness, thought leadership collapsing into templates, the same confident claims echoing across industries.”
Sameness brings boredom. Human creativity can change that. Charu Mahajan, Senior Vice President at IBM, has highlighted that creativity is as important as data literacy in the AI era.
As Jerry Wind, the Lauder Professor at The Wharton School, and his colleagues put it: “In today’s rapidly evolving marketplace, creativity is more than simply a ‘nice-to-have’; it’s a matter of survival.”
Wind further emphasized, “AI doesn’t replace human creativity—it amplifies it exponentially.” For example, with AI tools, we can “transform hours of brainstorming into minutes of AI-enhanced ideation.”
Final Words
Regardless of how fast we learn or how much we prepare for the future, we cannot catch up with AI’s speed. The point is not to beat AI, but to work with it and thrive with it. I like the sentences from an CNBC article: “AI is powerful. That power can either support judgment or quietly replace it. The difference is where you choose to stay involved.”
